Review of Bobby Moynihan's Snooki (and animated GIF)

In a fitting end to the last "Weekend Update" of 2010, Seth Meyers brought out some of the funniest characters from the year to sing a sweet Christmas carol together.

After going over the week's headlines, Meyers introduced his "three closest friends in the world," Snooki (Bobby Moynihan), Stefon (Bill Hader) and New York Governor David Paterson (Fred Armisen) to sing a "Weekend Update" version of "O Christmas Tree."

It was awesome to see our favorite "Update" characters from this season (minus Bobby's equally hilarious Guy Fieri impression) all together, and now we could totally see Stefon and Snooki hanging out. It was especially funny to hear Stefon call Snooki a "drunk leopard" and of course, he worked some tidbits about "jacked elves" into the song.

There's also a nice reference in their to Bobby's Guy Fieri!

Will Jason Sudeikis break out into films?

So Bobby's had a few small, supporting roles. Most SNL players are thinking about movies, but also most SNL players that graduate from SNL either fall into obscurity or they fall into supporting roles in films. That's currently where Bill, Andy, Bobby, Jason, and Kristen are at. But Kristen and Jason have chances coming up to star in films, and we're hoping Bobby will get a chance in the next few years as well.

The last breakout SNL star was Amy Poehler, and she went on to a TV show. She hasn't been successful in films yet, but she costarred in Baby Mamma, and her show will give her more opportunities.

Andy had an opportunity with Hot Rod in 2007, but that didn't do so well. And then Will Forte has had shots with Brothers Solomon and MacGruber. Those didn't do very well either.

Now it's Jason Sudeikis' turn for a shot with Hall Pass.

Release Date: 25 February 2011
Genre: Comedy
Cast: Alyssa Milano, Owen Wilson, Christina Applegate, Richard Jenkins, Vanessa Angel
Director: Bobby Farrelly, Peter Farrelly
Writer: Pete Jones, Peter Farrelly
MPAA: R
Studio: Warner Bros. Pictures

Plot:
A married man is granted the opportunity to have an affair by his wife. Joined in the fun by his best pal, things get a little out of control when both wives start engaging in extramarital activities as well.

Will Jason Sudeikis break out into films? I think he's got a really good shot here with Owen Wilson backing him up.

Bobby Moynihan rated #3 in the Robert De Niro SNL episode

3. Bobby Moynihan (Last Week: 1)
Moynihan was the only cast member who can still be described as relatively new who had any sort of presence on Saturday night’s episode — which is a very good sign for Moynihan. Sure, he had one of the best sketches of the night as a Robert De Niro-hating Meet the Parents fan, but his recurring role as Vinny Vedecci’s son gets me every time.

TV Guide calls Bobby Moynihan "hysterical"

Andy Samberg scored with "I Just Had Sex," a "D--- in a Box"-worthy rap with fellow Lonely Islander Jorma Taccone (not to mention Akon, Blake Lively and Jessica Alba), while musical guests Eminem and Lil Wayne tore down the house. And "Weekend Update" concluded with three not-so-wise men — Gov. David Patterson (Armisen), breakout club kid Stefon (the brilliant Bill Hader) and Snooki (a hysterical Bobby Moynihan) — to rival the classic SNL trio of Tarzan, Tonto and Frankenstein.

Bobby Moynihan is Comeback Player of the Year

Comeback Player of the Year: Bobby Moynihan

Moynihan did not have a great 2009-2010 season. Honestly, considering the small amount of airtime he received last season, I really didn’t expect him to be back. I mean, yes, I was rooting for him, but even what looked like what was becoming his signature character (Mark Payne) never made an appearance last season. This season is a different story. Still missing a signature recurring character (we all love Ass Dan, but it’s not really his sketch), Moynihan has nevertheless broken though this year from “guy who may or may not get to stand in the background during a sketch,” to a legitimate talent that will be a driving force on the show for years to come. Look through the great sketches this season — “Fockers Fan,” “A Message from the TSA,” “Kickspit,” “Black Friday” — Moynihan is everywhere. And, honestly, it couldn’t happen to a nicer guy...

Bobby Moynihan rated #1 in the Anne Hathaway episode

1. Bobby Moynihan (Last Week: 12)
I don’t know what it is (well, maybe I do), but Moynihan brings his “A” game when Hathaway is around (remember their dance-off sketch in 2008?). Moynihan was front and center in the two best sketches of the night: “Black Friday” and “Message from TSA,” not to mention his take on Guy Fieri for “Weekend Update.”

See how the rest of the cast stacks up here:
http://www.movieline.com/2010/11/who-scored-big-in-week-seven-of-snls-not-ready-for-prime-time-player-relevancy-poll.php

====================

I think Bobby had some great skits, but two commercials and a good (but not his best) Weekend Update impression probably got him #1 mostly because the other players didn't really step up that week.

Eater's Review of Bobby Moynihan's Guy Fieri impression

Here's Bobby Moynihan doing his great Guy Fieri impression on "Weekend Update" from [November's] Saturday Night Live. Sample quote: "Now I, for one, go bezerkey for turkey, but gobble gobble, let's make it full throbble." (Fieri was also lampooned last year on SNL.)

...Fieri shares some of his boozy Thanksgiving dishes, including the turduckenrabpigcowcowhorsishgamehen, which is a "chicken inside of a duck inside of a turkey inside of a rabbit inside of a pig inside of a baby cow inside of a big cow inside of a horse all stuffed into a Cornish game hen." And then deep-fried in Jägermeister?

SlashFood Review of Bobby Moynihan's Guy Fieri

When Bobby Moynihan does Guy Fieri on "Saturday Night Live," it's always over the top, and in this week's sketch he pulled off what everyone who's ever heard of the turducken has joked about for years -- he added six more animals.

He builds a turkduckenrabpigcowcowhorsishgamehen, and then deep-frys it.

Eater rounded up an SNL gallery of the best food skits, from Tina Fey's "Brownie Husband" to Kristen Wiig as Paula Deen eating whole sticks of butter. Check out the clips in between rolling out your Thanksgiving pie crusts; they'll have you rolling on the kitchen floor.

Good Bobby Moynihan SNL Review - Robert De Niro gets some help

This image is from the Bobby Moynihan Keith skit:

Robert De Niro 's hosting stint on "Saturday Night Live" on Dec. 4 is an inconsistent blend of meta humor and just plain odd moments, but with a little help from his "Little Fockers" co-star Ben Stiller, pulls together some funny, but not really hilarious moments.

...

"Little Fockers Set Visit"

Little Keith (Bobby Moynihan) can't believe he's on the "Little Fockers" set (wow!) and ate from craft services (wow!) and looked through the camera viewfinder (wow!). But when De Niro (playing himself yet again) arrives, Keith could care less. In fact, he's kind of antagonistic. When De Niro tells him that the makeup guy's job is to make him look good, Keith's response is "Where was he when you made 'Analyze That'?" Ouch. A surprise guest appearance by Ben Stiller brings the skit home.

SNL Review - De Niro plays himself

De Niro in the Blizzard Man sketch:

Here is an excerpt from this review that mentions the Bobby Moynihan Keit sketch...

De Niro is a brand in his movies, who seems currently to be in coasting mode, so nobody feels like asking more of him for live TV either. So he sits there frustrated in yet another edition of "What Up with That" playing himself, and visits another talk show ain the episode as well, sitting for Italian TV with Vinny Vedecci. De Niro plays himself in a third sketch when Bobby Moynihan's little kid comes on the set of a "Fokkers" movie and is impressed with everyone but De Niro.

4. Bobby Moynihan (26 points): This was Moynihan’s second appearance as “second-hand news correspondent” Anthony Crespino. He was able to land a few decent sized laughs from the crowd this week, but nothing really stood out. Here’s hoping we get to see the return of Mark Payne this season.

Bobby must say goodbye to Jenny Slate

Jenny Slate didn't prove her value to the show, and according to this article, she's out.

We'll miss her funny commercials, but really? That's it? Bobby, Nasim, and Abby have been busting out the impressions and characters and Jenny just wasn't keeping up and staying competitive. Yes, it is a competion; because they're only showing so many skits, so the players need killer material to get their air time, because the writers are going to concentrate on the known elements and bits that they know the players can do. Here's the article...

========================

Jenny Slate, who recently completed her first season at “Saturday Night Live,” will not be returning to the show.

“Saturday Night Live” has finalized its cast for the coming 36th season of the NBC late-night sketch series, hiring four new featured players while dropping a performer who was added to its ensemble last year. The information was provided by a person with firsthand knowledge of planning at “Saturday Night Live” but who was not given permission by NBC to speak on the matter.

Jenny Slate, who finished her freshman year at “Saturday Night Live” in the spring, will not have her contract picked up for a second season, the source said. Ms. Slate, a veteran of the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater, had a bit of a trial by fire at “S.N.L.” when she accidentally used an obscene word during the first episode of the 2009 season. But after settling in at the show, Ms. Slate went on to portray quirky characters like the television pitchwoman Tina-Tina Chaneuse. She also appears in the HBO comedy “Bored to Death,” and recently had a hit viral video with “Marcel the Shell With Shoes On,” a stop-motion animated short that she wrote with its director, Dean Fleischer-Camp, and for which she provided the voice of the title character.

Read more here:
http://artsbeat.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/09/07/saturday-night-live-cast-adds-four-and-loses-one-more/
===================

This is interesting, because essentially Nasim and Abby get the blessing, and Vanessa Bayer replaces Jenny. With females getting let go two years in a row now, Vanessa has to hit the ground running.

This is sad because Bobby worked hard to support Jenny and did a great job supporting her commercials. It's sad that she didn't make the cut, but I'm sure Bobby is going to do a good job keeping that relationship open enough for the future.

Enjoy!

Who has been anchor of Weekend Update the longest?

Seth Meyers is starting his 5th season (so he's only had 4 seasons), but this will be only his 2nd full season as the sole anchor (a little longer than that, cuz Amy Poehler left mid season).

Amy Poehler was co-anchor for 5 seasons. Horatio Sanz co-anchored with Amy after Tina and before Seth for 1 season (05-06). Tina Fey was co-anchor for 6 seasons. Jimmy Fallon was co-anchor for 4 seasons. Colin Quinn was the sole anchor for 3 seasons (those were terrible). Norm MacDonald was the sole anchor for 4 seasons. Kevin Nealon for 3 years. Dennis Miller for 6 years (85-91). Christopher Guest for 1 year (84-85). Brad Hall was 2 years (82-84). Mary Gross and Brian Doyle-Murray co-anchored for 1 year (81-82). Jane Curtain mostly co-anchored for 4 years (76-80). Bill Murray co-anchored for 2 years (78-80). Dan Aykroyd co-anchored for 1 year (77-78). Chevy Chase anchored for 2 years (75-76).

Jane Curtain is a complicated story. She took over for Chevy Chase when he left in 76. Then in the next season (77-78), she co-anchored with Dan Aykroyd. Then they switched from Dan to Bill Murray and Jane co-anchored with Bill. So Jane has 4 years in her, but 1 wasn't a full year and 3 were as the co-anchor.

Kevin Nealon did the Subliminal News (check it out if you haven't).

So the answer to who anchored the longest (including as co-anchor):
1. Dennis Miller (6 seasons)
1. Tina Fey (6 seasons)
2. Amy Poehler (5 seasons)
3. Jane Curtain (4 seasons)
3. Norm MacDonald (4 seasons)
3. Jimmy Fallon (4 seasons)
3. Seth Meyers (4 seasons)
4. Kevin Nealon (3 seasons)
4. Colin Quinn (3 seasons)
5. Chevy Chase (2 seasons)
5. Bill Murray (2 seasons)
5. Brad Hall (2 seasons)
6. Dan Aykroyd (1 season)
6. Mary Gross (1 season)
6. Brian Doyle-Murray (1 season)
6. Christopher Guest (1 season)
6. Horatio Sanz (1 season)

Seth needs two more seasons (including this coming one) to tie with Dennis and Tina; 3 to win. Both Dennis and Tina were co-anchors in their first season, so each was only on SNL for 6 seasons. (So Seth and most of the others have the disadvantage that their first year on SNL was not as an anchor.)

Tina Fey was the only featured player to start as an anchor. (But she was the head writer at that point, so obviously Lorne was willing to take a chance with her.)

The only family members to both be anchors were Billy Murray and Brian Doyle-Murray (brothers). There have been other relatives as players, but not anchors... Belushis, Murrays, Aykroyds, Sweeneys, and Elliotts. They were all siblings except for Chris and Abby Elliott (father/daughter).

It's interesting that a lot of people thought that having Tina Fey and Jimmy Fallon co-anchor was a new idea, but that first started in 1977 (3rd season) with Jane Curtain and Dan Aykroyd and continued with Jane and Bill Murray.

So if we were going to rank them for how long they anchored only as sole anchors (not co-anchors), then we have:
1. Dennis Miller (6 seasons)
2. Norm MacDonald (4 seasons)
3. Kevin Nealon (3 seasons)
3. Colin Quinn (3 seasons)
4. Chevy Chase (2 seasons)
4. Brad Hall (2 seasons)
5. Jane Curtain (1 season)
5. Seth Meyers (1 season)
5. Christopher Guest (1 season)

So if we're going by that scale, Seth doesn't have a chance. There's no way he's got 5 more years in him. =^)

Bobby has three new co-workers on SNL

In the rounds that Lorne and Kristen Wiig have been making (and probably others), SNL did select three new performers to replace Will Forte. More of my opinions after the news story...

Three comedians — Paul Brittain, Vanessa Bayer, and Taran Killam — are rumored to join the cast of Saturday Night Live for its 36th season.

According to The Comic’s Comic, Brittain is a Chicago-based improviser and sketch comedian, Bayer is a Cleveland native who also performs throughout Chicago, and Killam has been on-air with MADtv and Nick Cannon’s Wild ‘N Out.

FYI: Yesterday, it was announced that Will Forte decided to call it quits after eight seasons on SNL.

Here are video clips of Bayer and Killam…

Vanessa Bayer: Blue Shield of California Commercial

Taran Killam: Scrubs Interns - Webisode 5

Article from:
http://justjared.buzznet.com/2010/08/27/saturday-night-lives-new-hires-revealed/#ixzz0xyPFgMrd
===============================

So Killam is more of a progressive step, since he's already been doing his comedy on TV for awhile (similar to how Amy Poehler and Kenan Thompson both were doing comedy on other shows before SNL). (I'm actually surprised Killam would take this gig, because he would probably be offered his own sitcom otherwise.) And Bayer and Brittain are more of the "finds." So we'll continue to check these three out and let you know what we think.

Brittain and Bayer were both confirmed through their improv organization, the Improv Olympics. Taran has not yet been confirmed through a direct source (SNL, The Groundlings, or Killam).

Bobby Moynihan only had 2 seasons with Will Forte

MacGruber has survived his last explosion.

Will Forte is keeping up the "Saturday Night Live" tradition of late-August departures by not coming back to the series for Season 36.

The New York Times reports that multiple sources say Forte won't be coming back and that the parting was amicable -- though at Forte's request. He wants to devote more time to other projects.

Hopefully those other projects will bring him more success than "MacGruber," the hilarious but certifiable bomb adaptation of one of his many "SNL" characters.

And there've been so many... the Falconer, Clancy T Bachleratt, absent-minded ESPN Classic commentator Greg Stink and, most recently, the monotone lothario Hamilton, whose inappropriate speeches at weddings, funerals and Q&As made for some of last season's funnier sketches.

UPDATE: NBC referred Zap2it to Forte's personal publicist who confirmed the news, saying, "After eight great seasons, Will has made the decision to move on from SNL to pursue new opportunities. He is eternally grateful to Lorne and all of the incredible people he worked with over the years."

So what do you think -- a good or bad move for Forte? And, most importantly, how much will you miss him?

From:
http://blog.zap2it.com/frominsidethebox/2010/08/saturday-night-live-will-forte-not-returning-next-season.html
==============

Okay, so I'm actually more surprised that this came at Will's request. Lorne will need to clean house soon (the average stay is approaching 8 years instead of 4-6), but he does need to line up new performers.

So Lorne is probably happy about this, because he has one less tough decision about who to ask to leave.

My personal opinion is that Will won't be terribly missed. He is a great straight man, MacGuber is amazingly and consistently funny on SNL, and his songs are hilarious (and I love his dancing coach), but his humor is usually too weird. He's bombed in two movies now that he's starred in.

So is this a good move for Will? Hard to say. He was great and valuable on SNL, but it's better to leave voluntarily for your career than to get kicked off. He picked a great time to go. So really it's just a question of what he has in mind and if it will succeed. If it's another movie... probably not.

Enjoy!

Is Bobby Moynihan coming back to Saturday Night Live?

I think it would be crazy for him not to be invited back, but here's a wish list from Faith, and Bobby's not on the list...

The people on the cast of SNL are I think almost the same. Andy's staying. I think a black female will be introduced.

- Abby Elliott

- Bill Hader

- Seth Meyers

- Nasim Pedrad

- Andy Samberg

- Jason Sudeikis

- Kenan Thompson

Featuring

- New Cast Member to Play Obama

- New White Guy

- New Female Cast Member

===================

So Kristen already said she'd come back, and we know Bobby wouldn't miss it. Plus I don't know why Fred would leave. Will Forte is also missing from this list. Basically, my best guess is that Fred, Will, or Kenan would be the next to go. But with Kenan as the only black member, Fred doing most all the cold openings, Will playing a lot of the straight guy and every-man characters, and the fact that none of them have other options to go to, it might be awhile longer before they leave. Plus it doesn't look like Lorne has a bunch of hot shot young actors to bring in and mix it up, like he did in 2005 with Kristen, Andy, Jason, and Bill (which would mean more of a reason to phase out the older actors).

Enjoy!

Bobby Moynihan - His characters part 1

“If my sketch doesn’t get on or if I get cut… you know, the Steve Martin episode was on my birthday and I’d been thinking about it for months. Like, what are the chances of my birthday falling on a Saturday and Steve Martin hosting? This is the greatest gift I’ve ever gotten in my entire life… and I got completely shut out of the live show— I was in one of the digital shorts. And you’re upset and devastated but it’s just that thing of: Don’t complain, don’t hide and don’t let anybody know that you’re upset because it doesn’t matter. It’s about the show, it’s not about you. If you pout and complain, you’re going to look like an asshole. I’m still a nerd. If I’m not in the show I go down the studio and just watch because I feel so lucky I’m even able to be in the building.”

- Bobby Moynihan
